Such a Slacker…

05 Nov

I haven’t posted here in so long!  Didn’t even do a post on New York (except for captioning photos posted on facebook… does that count?).  But guess what?!  Yesterday was my birthday and Mike got me one of those teeney internet notebooks with our reward points from our credit card!! Sweet! Free laptop!  I can no longer say that reward points don’t count, I guess you really can get good stuff with them!  Anyway, now that I have one, I can utilize some of Evan’s independent playtime to write!  Which is great because I really need Evan’s naptime for doing household stuff and want evening down time to hang out with Mike or work on my projects!  We have one small room in our house that is really babyproofed so I can watch Evan easily and write at the same time.  Woo hoo!  Right now he is eating cheerios and clobbering his wobbly penguin toy.  We’ll see how long it takes before he wonders what I’m up to and comes to check this thing out.  I know I’ll have to be careful not to let him see the screen.  Lol.  I also know that this is probably a short-lived treat since it won’t be long before he starts climbing up on the couch.  For now though it’ll be great!

So what has Evan been up to?  Evan is 10 1/2 months, 21 some odd pounds, has four teeth with two more on the way and is a total comedian.  He is such a little social butterfly taking such delight in other people and kids.  Whenever we go anywhere, the more people the better, he’s in heaven.  And if there’s music to boot, watch out!  Do we have a superstar in the making?  Cool.  He can support us when we’re older! :)   My most recent amazement is with his new mimicking skills… show him how to put the man in the car, and he’s on it.  Show him how to roll the ball down the slide, put the shape in the box, whatever he always tries to do it.  He’s starting to copy faces and sounds we make too.  He can say “Dad” with a heavy emphasis on the last “d” so it sounds like “Da-DUH.”  He has lots of conversations with himself using only variations of this word.  We think he knows it also means Dad.  He says “Muh-muh-muh” too on occasion, usually when he’s upset.  His favorite toy is his laugh and learn kitchen which he plays with everyday…especially changing the channels on the radio.  Other favorites are a 99cent pinwheel and balls of all shapes and sizes (anything that rolls really).  He dribbles rolling objects around the room many times a day (soccer star p’haps?).

So what have I been up to?  My latest project, which has really been about 6 years in the making, has finally been started!  As a birthday present to myself, I opened an etsy.com store to sell my artwork and homemade crafts!  YAY!!  I am so excited about this… it has been a dream forever, and I’m hoping I can build it up slowly so that by the time Evan starts school, I can work from home.  Right now I only have one item for sale, but it’s a start right!  More to come soon.  Here’s the store website:  Maker of the House Creations. I also started another blog to match the store for moms… mainly geared for stay-at-home-moms, but other moms may find it useful as well.  I started it as a place to keep track of what I’ve learned about being a SAHM, housekeeping, crafting and raising kiddos.  Mostly stuff that Home Ec taught our moms, but that we are having to learn on the fly!  I’m keeping it a little more businessy and this one more personal, for friends and family.  Let me know what you think!  Here is that site:  Maker of the House.

What has Mike been up to?  How about being a great husband to start with.  I’ll take this opp to publicly thank him for helping me get my business blog and store up and running and backing me up with “you can do its!”  He is just great.  I am so lucky.  I’m also so in love with the fact that he loves to cook!  Lately, he’s gotten re-interested in trying out new recipes on the weekend and usually ends up making two or three things that last us through several lunches and dinners during the week.  Gina gave him a cookbook that he loves and I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes through it cover to cover eventually.  He’s also asked for COOKING CLASSES for Xmas!! Ok, so how AWESOME is that for ME??!  Yes, I don’t know how I got so lucky.  He’s also a great Dad, and I’m sick of Evan going around saying “Da-duh, Da-DUH, DA-duh” ALL day. :)   sigh.

That about sums it up for us right now.  I’ll try to write shorter posts, more often now.  We’ll see how it goes.  Thanks for reading! :)

What is your personality type?

30 Aug

Ok, so I originally had this as a sidenote on my last post and then decided to make it a post in its own right.  That’s how obsessed I am with this subject (typical ENFP).  I am always interested in the whole personality type subject and hearing about what type other people I know end up being and whether or not they think it really describes them or not.

I recently got re-interested in this since facebook put up an app on that subject.  It’s kind of like having your fortune read…so if you like that kind of thing….take this test to see what you are (facebook surprised me and actually got the same result, so it must not be that bad of a test) and then read about your type here (the best place on the web I’ve found on this subject).  Consider yourself lucky if I haven’t hounded you personally on this subject, it is one of my favorites!  Let me know what you discover about yourself or if you think it’s all a bunch of hooey! :)

One thing I learned about my type is that although it is relatively rare (5% of the general population), it is a type which is attracted to certain careers and also a type that tends to seek others out and glom onto one another…therefore, it turns out not suprisingly that many of my closest friends are also ENFP or very similar.  Many, I feel sure, are also the opposite of my type because that is also attractive (opposites attract sort of thing), but that turns out harder to prove b/c it takes a great deal of convincing to get that type to take the test :)   Other ENFPs and similars are eager and willing to do it :P   All very amusing!

BTW, that test is not the official type sorter test, but it seems to be a reliable one and it’s free and you don’t have to sign up to a website to take it, which is why I picked it.

Early Mornin’ Coffee Time

30 Aug

So E is still returning to his old self after bad cold, which means 50% chance of complete wake-up for me.  Overnight last night he woke up at 4:30am and went right back to sleep.  But, now that I’m accustomed to getting up I couldn’t get back to sleep and after staring at the clock for an hour I finally got up and made some coffee.  I don’t mind this much since I’ve discovered I can pretty much function on 5-6 hours of sleep relatively well and I enjoy having some time to myself to write in this blog, catch up on reading everyone else’s or piddling around on the internet.  It’s quite relaxing really.  Evan has woken up a few more times since then, but has gone back to sleep…I don’t see how he can hear me in here (our office space/closet is separated from his crib by a thin wall)  but I wonder if he can.  I think he’s just a light sleeper like me; I really hope he won’t have to live with a lifetime of sporadic insomnia as I have. :(   Luckily, mine comes and goes and is more upsetting at certain times than others.

Anyway, to get to the point of this blog post…Since my personality type requires (and I do mean requires) me to always have a list of projects/goals/interests of the month in mind and eventually that list gets too big for my brain, and I have to write it down somewhere…I thought I would do it here.  Of course, that doesn’t mean anything actually gets fully finished (here is a portrait of an ENFP personality). So here are some things going on in my life right now.

1.  Learn about how to invest money so we don’t have our savings sitting around not doing anything.  I’ve always read financial self-help books that talk about how great life will be if you put away and save, hopefully earning that 10% interest.  Recently went to a meeting on money with my mom’s club and it re-inspired me to find that elusive 10% somewhere…we are trying!

2.  Learn how to sew.  I always watch the classes at The Mable House to see if there’s one I want to take.  They have all kinds of great classes from photography to pottery to Spanish.  I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas last year even though I don’t have a clue how to use it (temporary bout of domesticity induced by pregnancy?), so I was elated to find a “learn how to use your sewing machine” class at the arts center!  Yay!  This will satisfy both my need for a creative outlet and my craving for a project/learning something new bug.  Since we’ve had our house up for sale and I had to pack up my art table, I’ve been feeling especially deprived, so I’m really excited.  (Thank you to Jo and Lisa for making this possible, since I needed a babysitter for 3 of the classes).

3.  Going to music classes with Evan.  Also at the Mable House, Evan and I will be playing for 1/2 hour every week with all kinds of musical instruments and some new baby friends.  I know he’s going to love it since he loves turning everything into a drum, and he recently starting “dancing” to music (bobbing up and down with a silly grin on his face).

4.  Possibly getting to go to New York finally?  I regret not going when one of my best friend’s lived up there.  Mike is going for the UN this year so if I get a cheap ticket last minute, I might be able to finally see what’s north of D.C., a part of the country to which I’ve never been.  I would only have a few days, but I plan on seeing Central Park, the Met and hopefully getting out to the Statue of Liberty.  If anyone has any suggestions for must-sees on such a short time (few days at most) let me know.  Evan will certainly be a well-traveled man by the time he is year old!

That’s all the big stuff I can think of right now.

Pictures and Blogger Subscribing

20 Jan

I just wanted to remind you that we have a website for photos since we’ve recently added a bunch of Evan. Here it is: SmugMug Pictures Hopefully we can start putting videos on there too, but so far that hasn’t worked.

Also, if you want to follow this blog I added some ways to follow/subscribe in the right hand column of this page. You may or may not be able to do this depending on whether you have a google account or whatnot. Under subscribe, there is a dropdown with the other accounts that have the ability to allow you to follow this blog.

If you try it, let me know how it works.

Mike – Certified Open Water Diver

17 Mar

I am so proud of Mike! This weekend we went down to Florida and he completed his open water SCUBA diving certification. And I was lucky enough to get to tag along for his first dives out in the real world. Unfortunately the weather was nasty so we haven’t yet tackled the ocean…but after seeing Mike dive like a pro in Vortex Springs, I am sure that the Sea of Cortez will be meeting him soon.

Vortex was an interesting though super-commercial place and had a really cool cavern that Mike’s instructors saved until the last training dive. There were tons of fat koi and bluegill everywhere and even some cool freshwater eels! They were really interesting. But the best part for me was seeing Mike diving for the first time! He would look at me and I could just see his smiling eyes…he was loving it! After he was certified, his instructors said we could go diving on our own. I asked Mike how long he wanted to stay under for his last dive of the weekend. His reply? “As long as possible!” That was music to my ears!

As much as I didn’t want to admit it before, I was really hoping that he would love diving as much as I do…I think we have a convert. You can’t pressure someone to dive…it is a sport that not everyone enjoys, you either love it or you don’t…and you can’t make someone get into it. Working as a divemaster I saw way too many couples where one person really wanted to do it and the other was being pressured into it…it turned into a dangerous/not fun situation every time. So as much as I love the water, I knew Mike had to want to do it for himself and decide for himself if SCUBA diving was for him. He decided he wanted to try it and I think if you ask him what he thinks about it he’ll say…wait a minute let me ask him…ok ;) he says “yeah it’s pretty cool main.” :D lol. YAY!! so now we have another new hobby to get into together. Our friends Jolynn and Roy took the class with Mike, so we even have some friends to take weekend trips with so we have a lot to look forward to!

In a little more than two weeks, we’ll be heading to Baja and the Sea of Cortez on our honeymoon, WHOPPPEEEEE!!!! We can’t wait!! And Mike is so stoked to hit the ocean underwater. He tried snorkeling for the first time when we went on our cruise in Dec. 2006 and now he’ll get to see the fish eye to eye.

I also want to stop and give some props to Mike for trying something he knew meant so much to me, even though he wasn’t sure he liked water so much. It
means a lot that the person I love so much and am about to marry would do that for me without me even having to say anything. He did it all on his own and was a “natural” from the beginning, according to our friend who took the class with him. I have to say that he’s also a natural and the best ever future hubby! YAY MIKE! Now I just have to learn how to ski and we’ll be even ;)

Mike gets knighted by snorkel into the diving world.

a call for meaningful poetry

05 Dec

Hey everybody…

…so I have a favor to ask….

…I was hoping you guys could dig around in your memories and favorite books and submit to me some poetry or other readings that might be good for our wedding. We do have one thing picked out but we haven’t even started on writing the ceremony and I’d love some more material to work with. I googled a lot and keep coming up empty, plus it would mean more to us if it came from one of you! Gimme whatcha got. Love Jess

xmas decorating xtravaganza

01 Dec

Mike went out this morning and got a HUGE tree. This is our 2nd xmas together so we had most of our decorations already. Last year we tried to take pictures but they didn’t really turn out with our little point and shoot. Now we have a better camera. Sweet! Last night I drove Mike around the neighborhood so he could try out the camera with people’s xmas lights. They turned out so much better than we’ve ever had nighttime pics turn out. Yay for new toys! Check out our pictures here.

Jess’ First Blog Post

01 Dec

So I decided it would be easier to share our adventures and shenanigans with you guys online rather than emailing every time we have a cool new picture or event to tell you about. This is spurred by the fact that we are enjoying our new xmas/wedding/birthday/next3yearspresents present to each other: a Canon D40 camera!! Woo hoo! We’ve waited a whole year for this moment and now we need a place to post our favorite pictures. I think you can subscribe to our blog and everytime we update our blog an email will be sent to you telling you to check it out. But we’re still figuring it out so stay posted. YAY!
